God is All We Need

Scripture

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. (Psalm 23:1)

Observation

A shepherd cares for his sheep. If a sheep is hungry, sick or falls prey to a predator, he has no means to provide for or protect himself. It is the shepherd alone who tends to his needs whenever there is a problem. Though we are not literal sheep, that is the nature of our relationship with God. Because God blessed us with many things and abilities, including having hands to feed ourselves, we may forget that, even when we have absolutely nothing, losing all possessions and means (like defenseless sheep), God will still provide, because He loves us.

Application

Because He provides and will never leave me unattended, He alone is sufficient. How does that truth align with my thoughts and worries each day? We worry about possessions and saving for rainy days instead of having contentment, which sometimes distract us from delighting in God and His providence. It is said that when God is all we have, then we realise He is all we need. When all is stripped away, we realise how much we need God, and every other possession pales in comparison.

Prayer

God, our Father, thank you for all the blessings each day that are more than I deserve. They are so bountiful that sometimes, I forget they come from you. I even get conceited, thinking I earned them through my power and go on to desire more. Forgive me, and help me to not cling to possessions but to share them with others. Even if I lose them all, I lack nothing as you are my shepherd.
