James 4: 4-10
4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us?
6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."
The call for us is to be humble before God. When we are humble before Him, we acknowledge that He is the Giver of all successes. God Himself said, "... these are the ones I look on with favor; those who tremble at my word" (Isaiah 66:2). God dislikes pride because it dethrones God but promote self. The warning and consequence given as a result of pride is destruction - "... pride goes before destruction" (Proverbs 16:18). On the other hand, God's promise is to be on our side and favour us if we are humble.
Application: In all my successes and daily victories over my inadequacies, I need to acknowledge that God is the One in them. I must continue to depend upon Him to lead. This is a constant reminder to myself.
I pray that I will be able to warn myself not to allow pride to overtake God. I will not allow my own ego to grow above You. Amen.
