Fixating on Circumstances and Comparisons
Song
Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.
Observation
When things don't work out for us in life, we may play the comparison game, being envious of the situation of others and asking God, why are our prayers not answered and why others have it good. We start to think about "what if" situations, become bitter and wallow in self-pity.
Application
However, the lines from the beautiful hymn "Turn your eyes upon Jesus", reminds us to gaze at Jesus, and just glance at the world. God's goodness to us is unchanging, regardless of circumstances. This gives joy and peace which frees us from the pressure of comparing with others. The hymn tells us to fixate upon God, and not our circumstances. Truly when that happens, the circumstances do pale in comparison to what really matters, the depth of His love for me. This helps me stay on my assigned track He has given to me, without distractions.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for looking at other people's successes or at things I want with envy instead of looking at you. Forgive me for complaining constantly of the circumstances I'm being placed in, ridiculing what you set out for me. Thank you, that amidst all these, you were and will always be there for me. Your providence, your grace is sufficient for me. Amen.
