Life Goals Never Satisfy
Scripture
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 2:11)
Observation
Here, we see King Solomon lamenting his lingering feeling of discontent, after he amassed everything a man possibly can: wealth, power, prestige, entertainment and women. Similar feelings were echoed by famous actor, Jim Carrey, when he once tweeted, "I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of, so they can see that it’s not the answer". British Popstar Robbie Williams also expressed that he felt "empty", after experiencing all that success and fame could offer.
Application
Above are just a few of the many examples that our life goals cannot satisfy us. How do we find true fulfillment then? The good news is that whatever we long for to fill the hole in our hearts, is already offered to us, in Jesus. Jesus says, "whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:14). Think about the joy and happiness you find in your relationships with friends and family. With Jesus, it is even better as humans inevitably disappoint. Only Jesus can fill that hole in our hearts.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, Thank you for being my best friend that I can always count on and confide in. Forgive me for always seeking gratification through other means when You have always been right there for me. It's whether I am willing to go to You and listen to You, amidst all the distractions of the world. Help me each day to taste the goodness that only You can offer. In Your name, Amen.
